The Arctic Five - Building innovation and growth in the Arctic

The ability to foster and promote renewal and innovation in Arctic Europe, and other arctic regions, is crucial to the competitiveness of these regions. To develop new ideas, working methods and solutions to arctic challenges we require both applied research and world-leading cutting-edge research. We also need access to skilled and well-educated workforces, access to educational opportunities throughout the region and different meeting places where we can exchange experiences and our unique arctic skills.

"The Arctic Five" is a partnership between Luleå University of Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, The University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, The University of Oulu and Umeå University in Umeå. All of these universities provide research of scientific excellence regarding different issues in the northern area. Through an "Arctic Agenda", these institutions want to raise important questions and challenges and together they are a strong voice within the academy. Together they want to get a stronger position that creates skills, innovation and development in the Arctic.

There are already ongoing research collaborations in the fields of mining, energy production and health. It is now time to initiate cooperation within three new areas: regional development, Sami / indigenous people and learning. These areas are closely linked to business needs and business opportunities. The proportion of applied research is large and are also of importance for business growth and global competitiveness.

Preliminary participations:

  • Roland Larsson, Dean, Luleå University of Technology
  • Catrine Norberg, Dean, Luleå University of Technology
