Mariia Iakovleva

Master of Northern Governance and Development

Mariia Iakovleva is a Master of Northern Governance and Development program student and a part-time research assistant. Originally Mariia is Sakha (Yakut) from the high north region of Russia – the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Mariia has a background in philology, sociology (Indigenous studies), and sustainable development of the Arctic. She gained her Bachelor degree in English from the North-Eastern Federal University in Russia, Master degree in Arctic studies from the University of Versailles (Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines) in France. Mariia has also completed the Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies’ courses at the University of the Arctic with an advanced emphasis in the local and regional governance and development at the Arctic University of Norway. She has an experience of working for the regional government of Yakutia in scientific and innovation projects’ development. Her recent activities include research work and project writing on community-based energy utility models, renewable energy technologies’ development in remote communities of Russia with the focus on energy subsidies’ policy.
