Cynthia Travers (USA)

Cynthia Travers is an officer in the United States Coast Guard, and served for two years aboard the polar icebreaker USCGC HEALY in support of three Arctic West Summer missions.  As a graduate student at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, she completed a thesis entitled, “Quantifying Sea-Ice Volume Flux using Moored Instrumentation in the Bering Strait,” and deployed for two summers to the Bering Strait as a member of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) Russian-American Long-term Census of the Arctic team.  After completing her Master of Science degree in Physical Oceanography, she taught undergraduate marine science courses at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, including a new Polar Oceanography and Policy elective course featuring a student Arctic research symposium.  Cynthia currently works at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, where she oversees funding, training, and resourcing of the Coast Guard’s National Security Cutter (NSC) fleet.
