Hitting the ground running

Hitting the ground running is a good description of my first full week at work for Arctic Frontiers.

These are Anu Fredriksons words after her first week as a new Director of Arctic Frontiers.

Anu is from Oulu, Finland but describes herself as an international person. She has lived, worked and studied in the United States, France, Russia and Norway. She is an allrounder with a special interest for politics. Her first dream job was at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland at the Embassy in Oslo where she worked as an Advisor in Political Affairs. Her second one was as a Director of the Arctic Economic Council, an independent business organization facilitating business-to-business activities and responsible economic development in the Arctic. Her third dream job is at Arctic Frontiers.

Anu has worked with Arctic issues for a decade and the Arctic Frontiers team is excited to finally have her onboard. “A look at our team calendar reveals the diversity of our daily tasks. From internal planning meetings and brainstorming to budget discussions, meetings with partners, outreach, and strategic discussions both with the team and with friends of Arctic Frontiers, the working week covers it all.” says Anu.

Anu will work closely with our partner network as we reshape the organizational structure of Arctic Frontiers both to strengthen the organization and to meet the challenges due to Covid-19. The team is now planning ahead for a digital Arctic Frontiers 2021 and Anu had her first encounter with the new realities of digital format when she had to deliver a speech to a camera instead of a physical audience.

Anu is multilingual and speaks Finnish, Norwegian, English and French fluently. She also has basic knowledge of German, Spanish and Russian which all come in handy in the international work that Arctic Frontiers does. As Anu puts it:

The geographic scale of contact during the week extends from Alaska to the Nordics and Brussels to Russia. In many ways this shows how interconnected and global the Arctic topics are, and how Arctic Frontiers serves as a hub bringing stakeholders together.

We are looking forward continuing setting the agenda on Arctic issues with Anu as a Director.

Welcome to the Arctic Frontiers team Anu!
